Santa Claus Uses Six Sigma for the Christmas Rush
Posted by: meikah | 13 December 2007 | 8:48 pm
It’s that time of year again when Santa Claus, the famous CEO of Polar Enterprises, Inc., is on top of what he likes doing best: producing toys and giving them to every child in the world.
With a worldwide customer base, which is increasing by the second, you would wonder how Santa does it without a snag.
I stumbled upon an interesting interview with Santa Claus by e-Zsigma newsletter’s Six Sigma Spotlight. Below are the highlights of the interview:
- Incorporating Six Sigma with Lean Manufacturing, and leveraging Senior Santa’s Helpers (aka Black Belts), toy production efficiencies at Santa’s company were up by 5%.
- Deployment and practice of Six Sigma - the entire system of toy production is dynamic and so they used modeling and experimental design and ended up with an optimized routing and delivery process. This has saved us a considerable amount of time… “I am home quicker for Mrs. Claus, and I even get to stop for my favorite post-delivery beverage… A Grandé Hot Chocolate at Starbucks… with lots of whipped cream!”
- Despite the magnitude of toy deliveries that needed to be done, at Santa’s Workshop, the so-called “last minute” rush is nonexistent. “Our deployment strategy for Six Sigma included a comprehensive assessment of our core business processes, using such tools as SIPOC, Process and Value Stream Mapping, Root Cause Analysis, and much more to identify the key processes and more importantly, the key variables affecting the capabilities and outcomes of each of these processes. Statistical analysis played an important role at the task level of the processes, so we could really analyze variation and capability. We then tied the outputs of these processes directly to our 6 billion plus customers, and using something I think they called Quality Function Deployment and House of Quality, we were able to align and quantify all of what we were doing with those outputs or deliverables. Our Senior Santa’s Helpers were trained in basic as well as advanced tools, including statistics, and were assigned specific projects aligned with our deployment and business strategy that would maximize the benefits to operations and solve many of the recurring problems we had been struggling with.”

Congratulations ATMI, Inc., the Best Achievement Award of Design for Six Sigma and Innovation
Posted by: meikah | 27 November 2007 | 9:17 pm
ATMI, Inc. manufactures point-of-use environmental equipment, thin film materials and delivery systems, and thin film deposition services to the semiconductor industry.
In the recently concluded The Global Six Sigma Summit and Industry Awards in Las Vegas, ATMI bagged the Best Achievement Award of Design for Six Sigma and Innovation.
This is their story:
“ATMI began Six Sigma knowledge-based management work in 2000, applying the techniques broadly in our operations, as well as in our new product development initiatives. While the ultimate validation is through success with customers and the growth of our business, we are very happy to have our innovative approach to Six Sigma deployment independently validated, as it is a key contributor to continued growth,” said Doug Neugold, Chief Executive Officer.
“This award is based upon our documenting how the tools and methodologies were used to design, develop, and commercialize our RegenSi(tm), AutoClean(tm), and Newmix(r) process efficiency solutions, each of which has the potential to save our customers many millions of dollars by bringing yield, cost, and throughput improvements to their processes,” said Tim Carlson, Chief Financial Officer. “Since inception, we’ve completed over 80 internal projects generating more than $20 million of savings for ATMI.” Continue reading…
Congratulations, ATMI!

Six Sigma and Innovation
Posted by: meikah | 15 July 2007 | 8:00 pm
There’s still much controversy about Six Sigma and innovation. Many companies, 3M being the most vocal and probably popular, are saying that Six Sigma and innovation counters each other out.
3M, which has been the most innovative company for years, allegedly stopped innovating when it adopted Six Sigma. I still could not fathom the reason for not being able to mix successfully Six Sigma and innovation.
Perhaps, those companies that have successfully implemented Six Sigma and and pursued innovation should speak up to end this debate once and for all.
The best venue for this kind of forum is IQPC’s Process for Innovation event on August 21-22, 2007 in The Gleacher Center, Chicago. The event will tackle this question and offers a structure for Innovation. This exclusive forum has been designed for leading Six Sigma and Innovation experts to discuss the practicalities of implementing Innovation across an organization alongside Six Sigma.
Check out the event and share with us what you have learned.

Six Sigma Movements
Posted by: meikah | 12 July 2007 | 7:39 pm
Early this month till mid month, we see Six Sigma practitioners assume important positions in big companies. Their doing so is hoped to make a difference–the Six Sigma advantage, that is–in their respective companies.
Last July 3, HTNG announced the appointment of Thomas Peck and Todd Thompson to Board of Directors. Hotel Technology Next Generation is a self-funded NGO that facilitates the development of next-generation, customer-centric technologies to better meet the needs of the global hotel community. Peck is a certified Six Sigma Master Black Belt, and has graduated from several of GE’s executive training programs, and is a published author. Thompson has years in experience in business process engineering among others.
In July 9, Blue Square Energy (BSE), a developer and manufacturer of high-performance silicon solar cells, announced that Alan Swanson is the new VP of Manufacturing Operations. Swanson has more than 25 years experience as a global manufacturing operations executive. As an expert in the Six Sigma methodology, he helped create Tyco Electronics’ Operational Excellence Organization.
In July 11, Newtek Business Services, Inc., a provider of business services and financial products to the small business market under the Newtek(TM) brand, announced that Gordon L. Schroeder is the 6th independent director to join the Newtek Board of Directors. Schroeder has taken extensive Six Sigma training from the GE Center for Learning and Organization Excellence.
