Dominion Resources Goes Six Sigma
Posted by: meikah | 7 October 2008 | 8:59 pm
It’s common knowledge that airlines have their share of problems, and so does the entire travel industry. From ticketing to advance purchases to claiming to refunds, and no-shows, all these incur expenses, and when not managed well, losses.
Thus, an effective process improvement methodology would do the industry a lot of good.
This is the reason why Dominion Resources, Inc. goes into Six Sigma. Led by its director of travel and corporate services Donna Kelliher, Dominion is able to implement a holistic Six Sigma approach to their processes. As Ms. Kelliher puts it:
… “it’s in our DNA”–Six Sigma offers a kind of brand awareness that brings integrity to unpopular policies, support for counterintuitive conclusions and buy-in from frequent travelers.
Based on their Six Sigma practitioners, Dominion has applied Six Sigma to the following:
- analyses of advance purchase and nonrefundable fares
- compliance to preferred hotel policies
- 24/7 travel agency services
- value added tax reclaim
- and considering an “express” project examining airline contracts
How Dominion uses Six Sigma to improve their services as described in the Procurement Travel article is quite commendable.
The article further discusses the cost and losses incurred from tickets purchased in advance. All the while, I thought advance purchases are generally good for airlines. Read more…

Lean Six Sigma at Lydall, Inc.
Posted by: meikah | 27 February 2008 | 11:35 pm
Lydall, Inc. is a leading producer of specialty engineered products for demanding thermal/acoustical and filtration/separation markets.
To be able to carry out the company’s strategy, one of which is to be global company known for its excellent service, high quality, and unique technologies, Lydall embarked on its Lean Six Sigma journey. That was in 2005.
A couple of years later, Lydall can already boast of significant benefits and savings brought about by its Lean Six Sigma initiatives.
According to Dale Barnhart, President and Chief Executive Officer:
“We closed the year with a solid fourth quarter as sales and operating income increased significantly when compared to last year’s fourth quarter. For the year, excluding the impact of foreign currency translation, sales increased by 1 percent and operating income by 4 percent, as compared to 2006. Contributing factors were: the strong performance of our air and liquid filtration businesses; continuing improvements by the vital fluids operation; a stable automotive business, despite current market conditions; and the ongoing benefits of our Lean Six Sigma efforts.
I can’t stress enough the importance of the Lean Six Sigma program to Lydall, especially in light of the current economic climate. Since we first began implementing Lean Six Sigma at the beginning of 2005, gross margins as a percent of net sales have increased by 290 basis points and we look forward to continued progress as Lean becomes inherent in the culture of Lydall.”

The Latest on Six Sigma at First Sumiden Circuits Inc.
Posted by: meikah | 11 December 2007 | 10:29 am
Early last year, I wrote about my plan to feature First Sumident Circuits Inc. or FSCI, but my tight schedule had not allowed it. But interviewing Dan Lachica, the president and COO of FSCI and a Six Sigma Black Belt, will be on top of my list for next year.
At any rate, more than a year after, FSCI is still making waves because of Six Sigma. The company is the country’s pioneer in manufacturing flexible printed circuits (FPCs). FPCs are thin and lightweight wiring components with electronic circuits printed on flexible substrate. These are found in consumer electronic productsm and this has been a Japanese dominated field. But FSCI is competing well because of the sound business practices, technology transfer and the sales and marketing network.
On top of these and with Dan Lachica at the helm, FSCI has embedded the Six Sigma psyche into its culture. As a result, it has received recognition (Platinum Award from the Safety Organization of the Philippines; 2nd Place in the 2006 European Six Sigma Summit Excellence Awards; and a similar award in the 2007 Asian Six Sigma Excellence Awards, and is enjoying significant savings pegged at $3.2M. It’s always heartwarming to know that a Filipino-based company is doing well because of Six Sigma.
