Six Sigma Companies News: GM Struggles to Shed a Legendary Bureaucracy

Here’s another edition of Six Sigma Companies News.
Because of the crisis, many big American companies are either closing down or applying for a stimulus package or emergency bailout. You wouldn’t think this could happen to these companies actually.
One of them is G.M. After it received the government’s emergency bailout, G.M. had to reevaluate its operations. And according to the latest news, it’s streamlining.
New York Times reports:
When G.M. collapsed last year and turned to the government for an emergency bailout, its century-old way of conducting business was laid bare, with all its flaws in plain sight. Decisions were made, if at all, at a glacial pace, bogged down by endless committees, reports and reviews that astonished members of President Obama’s auto task force.

Bath Fitter in Springfield Gets Funding for Six Sigma Training

Bath Fitter in Springfield gets funding support from the state Department of Labor & Workforce Development for Six Sigma training. The amount is $19,736.
The funds will be used for the training of 83 employees in Six Sigma, Manufacturing Efficiencies, and Lean offices.
Workforce Essentials, Inc. played a key role in awarding the grant to Bath Fitter.
The Tennessee Department of Labor and Workforce Development administers the Incumbent Worker Training program. The program has been structured to be flexible to meet the business’s training objectives. The business may use public, private, or its own in-house training provider based on the nature of the training.

Lydall Attributes Positive Financial Results to Lean Six Sigma

In the recent press release, Lydall announces positive results in their financial standing for the third quarter and nine months ended September 30, 2009.
Dale Barnhart, President and Chief Executive Officer, commented, “While net sales in the current quarter were lower than the third quarter of 2008, we began to see some positive signs in certain of the markets that our businesses serve. In the third quarter of 2009, net sales and gross margin percentage improved in all our segments compared to the second quarter of 2009. Net sales for the Company increased by $8.9 million, or approximately 16%, net of foreign currency translation, in the third quarter of 2009 compared to the second quarter of 2009. As a result of this improved revenue, the Company’s third quarter financial results improved significantly from the second quarter of 2009.
“We are encouraged by the improvement in financial results by our Performance Materials and Thermal/Acoustical segments. Operating income from the Performance Materials segment in the current quarter was $2.9 million, an improvement of $1.8 million from the second quarter of 2009. In our Thermal/Acoustical segment, we were able to record a nominal profit due to higher sales as well as from savings beginning to be realized from the consolidation of our North American automotive facilities and from our Lean Six Sigma program.
“Going into the fourth quarter of 2009, while we have started to show improvement in our financial results, the Company expects global economic uncertainties to continue to affect the markets in which the Company’s businesses operate. The Company will remain focused on opportunities in its markets, managing working capital, cash generation and improving our business operating processes through our Lean Six Sigma program.” Â

Lean Six Sigma and Kaizen Can Work Together To Improve Processes

If Kaizen and Six Sigma (or Kai Sigma) can work together successfully, then Lean Six Sigma and Kaizen, too.
A Japanese philosophy, Kaizen focuses on continuous improvement in all aspects of life, while Lean Six Sigma is a combination of Lean and Six Sigma incorporating the voice of the customer (VOC).
An article on News Journal Online says that Sea Ray Boats, which experienced low sales in the past, combined Lean Six Sigma and Kaizen to improve efficiency and safety while cutting costs and eliminating wasted time and materials. The programs are still ongoing.
Zack Chehaitli, director of continuous improvement at Sea Ray’s local plant, said the use of the “Kaizen” and “Lean Six Sigma” approaches has saved the company nearly $400,000 so far this year. From 2006 through 2008, the company saved $574,000 to $776,000 a year.

Bharti Airtel Wins Six Sigma Award

The Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) conferred upon industry awards to enterprises for setting new examples in various fields of Six Sigma implementation. The awards was judged on parameters such as customer impact, results achieved, sustainability of gains, employee involvement and commitment & linkage to strategic objectives of the business.
Bharti Airtel won the first prize for Six Sigma implemented in Transport network to enhance voice quality in its network.
