What are the Qualities of a Six Sigma Black Belt Candidate?
Posted by: meikah | 30 June 2008 | 11:46 pm
If you’re asking the same question, then check out Tony Jacowski’s article on content4reprint.com.
- Appreciates customer promotion - He must know the value of customer in the business equation.
- Has the right personal attributes - He must be the positive influence that motivate others; self-motivated, and I think should also be a self-starter.
- Displays some leadership qualities - He must be the change agent, and thus an initiator.
- Possesses good communication skills - He must be able to convey messages well, and act as an effective mediator between employees and management, a coach and trainor.
- Has the technical aptitude - Though not necessary, he must have some background in engineering, statistics, and computers.
Choosing candidates for Six Sigma Black Belt is crucial in your Six Sigma deployment because from them, a good change agent leader must emerge. It goes without saying that a Six Sigma initiative is nothing without the right people in the team.

The Benefits of Six Sigma
Posted by: meikah | 25 June 2008 | 11:40 pm
We have been reading about the benefits Six Sigma can give to your organizations. The benefits are varied and are achievable in different times or phase.
Over at Management Tips, Tony Jacowski shares Six Sigma’s contribution to an organization’s processes: eradicating business problems. Jacowski presents two major benefits:
Financial Benefits - Cash flow increases due to creation of additional revenue.
Operational Benefits Of Six Sigma Training - Employee satisfaction due to improvement in work flow, reduction in process times and steps, better usage of work space, etc. result from implementation of Six Sigma.
Conceptually, the benefits of implementation of Six Sigma emerge from breaking the mindset that product processes are invariable. Benefits also emerge as a result of interconnected activities. The result of this methodical approach to quality management is evidenced by reduced fluctuations in processes. Stability of this kind triggers a series of positive chain reactions within organizations.
I like the part that says that stability brings about positive chain reactions within organizations. I believe Six Sigma does achieve this. And when the initiative is sustained, all the more it attracts positivity that translates into huge benefits and savings.

On Six Sigma Training
Posted by: meikah | 19 June 2008 | 12:12 am
The Six Sigma or Lean Six Sigma training makes or breaks your (Lean) Six Sigma deployment. Based on what I know, it’s not enough that you send someone to training or that you just woke up one day and found Six Sigma appealing.
Thus, you need to prepare for it, and here are my suggestions:
- Let management initiate the training and the Six Sigma initiative.
- Decide on the kind of training that your company needs first: Six Sigma Champion? Six Sigma Black Belt, Six Sigma Master Black Belt, Six Sigma Green Belt?
- Determine the objectives you want to achieve after the Six Sigma training.
- Are your expectations realistic?
- Identify already the Six Sigma project that will be undertaken.
- If you are on the team that selects who are sent to training, choose those who have worked in the shop floor. They have a better grasp of how operations go.
- Evaluate the attitude and capability of the trainees. For one, they must have the inherent desire for change and improvement.
- Know that a (Master) Black Belt will have a full Six Sigma schedule after the training, thus he shouldn’t be working on other tasks aside from Six Sigma.
- Build a strong Six Sigma team based on #s 5&6.
- Prepare for the cost of this quality initiative.
If you are the trainee:
- Know the operations that you’re handling.
- Know which training are you taking.
- Examine your capabilities against that training.
- Prepare yourself: read, research, consult.
- Be an instrument of change, innovation.
- Be open minded.
- Be trainable.
- Study.
- Practice.
- Be a team player.

Six Sigma at Citation Corporation
Posted by: meikah | 27 May 2008 | 7:00 pm
Citation Corporation designs, develops and manufactures high-quality cast, machined and assembled components for the automotive, heavy trucks, and industrial markets. It employs 2,700 associates in Alabama, Texas, Indiana, Michigan, North Carolina and Wisconsin.
East Texas News reports that Citation just certified its first wave of Six Sigma Green Belts. The company eyes a company-wide initiative to certify 42 Six Sigma Green Belts at its castings facilities in 2008.
For this initiative, a GE Master Black Belt team is providing the company with training and project mentoring.
Citation’s COO, Cary Wood:
“Six Sigma certification is a valuable tool that is helping us reduce process variation and drive continuous improvement throughout our manufacturing operations. With these certifications, we are planning double-digit improvements in quality indicators. Additionally, Six Sigma methods will add support to our existing Lean initiatives already underway, aimed at strengthening our position as a world-class supplier.”
This initiative combined with the existing 18 Six Sigma Black Belts and the 21 members of senior management who recently received executive overview training, brings the total count to 81 employees, or 18 percent of the salaried workforce, who have gone through some level of Six Sigma training in the past six months.
