sixsig innovation of the week
The Husky Fried Ride is a Metro Bus powered by recycled deep fryer vegetable oil. It was unveiled in conjunction with
Earth Day festivities Friday, April 18th, at St. Cloud State University.
Now it wins the Innovation Award from MnSCU system for converting a Metro Bus from running on diesel fuel to running on 70 percent recycled deep fryer vegetable oil.
The proponent actually is the SCSU, and the award is for 2008-2009 Innovative Partnering and Collaboration Award.

SCSU competed with 64 other MnSCU schools who compete with academic, social and other innovative programs.

Even though it was SCSU’s first year in the program and they did not create this bus with the award in mind, they won “The Most Innovative Program.”

The bus was considered to be one of the most innovative programs that the competition has seen in years.

The Husky Fried Ride bus is easily distinguished with its colorful exterior which displays a picture of French fries rising from the gas tank.

An estimated 120,000 students, faculty and staff get a chance to ride the environmentally friendly bus on the Husky Shuttle park-and-ride routes and four different Campus Clipper routes that go through student housing areas in St. Cloud.

“Shareadrive” – A Six Sigma-Inspired Idea?

Posted by: meikah | 2 June 2009 | 11:38 pm

Over at Express Buzz is a story about transport innovation. It’s taking the idea of carpooling a notch higher.

Hariharan Ganesan, a city-based Six Sigma management consultant, came up with a novel initiative called ‘shareadrive.’ Launched in April, ‘shareadrive’ enables not only car owners and taxi operators but also two-wheeler riders to share a seat with commuters — who otherwise have to depend on public transport — and make money in the process.

A much larger and networked version of carpooling, which involves small groups of people known to each other with common routes and travel timings, ‘shareadrive’ connects individuals needing a ride and those having a spare seat in a vehicle at any given time. Anyone, irrespective of whether he/she owns a vehicle can log on to www.shareadrive.in and register with the organisation by paying Rs 100.

After a background check, the member will be provided with a photo identity card, a sticker for the vehicle and also a cap with the shareadrive logo for easy identification on the road.

I wonder how this shareadrive is doing. It’s a good idea, actually, and can work anywhere in the world.
