Batelco Continues with Six Sigma

Posted by: meikah | 17 February 2008 | 8:54 pm

six sigma at BatelcoYear 2006 was a banner year for Bahrain Telecommunications Company or Batelco. That was the year when the company invested more than BD50 million ($132.6 million) in the broadband infrastructure, new world class data centers, additional access to the web via a landing station (a first in Bahrain) and investment in Falcon cable systems and additional base stations for improved mobile coverage.

More importantly, that year, too, Batelco went into Six Sigma to improve customer service, product development, billing, and various IT processes aimed at more responsive customer care and a ‘single view’ of the customer.

A couple of years later, Batelco is still at it, and even pursuing vigorously its Six Sigma journey. AME Info reports that Batelco is investing in Six Sigma to achieve business excellence. Specifically, the company will invest in Six Sigma training to achieve its goal. So far, it has completed implemented 17 projects, the result of which has pleased the customers.

In that same article, too, CEO Peter Kaliaropoulos congratulated and rewarded 10 employees who have been certified as Six Sigma Black Belts, following their successful completion of the required professional training, through Juran Institute, USA.

Batelco is definitely on the right track!

Pricewaterhouse-Coopers Deploys Six Sigma

Posted by: meikah | 14 February 2008 | 9:16 pm

Pricewaterhouse-Coopers (PwC) is the world’s largest firm of accountants. I’m sure you know the nature of accountants’ work. It handles data, large figures even, and thus needs precision every step of the way.

What complicates things for PwC is that it has offices in different countries all over the world. How to coordinate all the company’s operations, and succesfully? PwC found the answer in Six Sigma.

Six Sigma at PwC's meeting and events servicesKathy Murray, managing director of infrastructure at PwC, saw MES (meeting and event services) as a prime candidate for the Six Sigma project “because it’s very process-oriented.” Meeting management had been centralized for years; however, Murray says, “individual meeting planners were doing their own thing. It was crying out for consistency.”

The Six Sigma project for MES started in April 2005, and as they say, the rest is history. Below are the improvements.
Process improvements:

  • A stronger meeting and event policy
  • Better cost avoidance
  • Better service

Technology improvements:

  • Better record-keeping
  • Increased automation
  • Improved tracking

Organizational improvements:

  • More staff
  • Division of tasks

Read how PwC leveraged Six Sigma and got benefitted by it.

Hattiesburg, Missouri Adopts Lean Six Sigma

Posted by: meikah | 12 February 2008 | 8:57 pm

The list of governments going into Six Sigma and Lean Six Sigma is getting longer. My previous posts had featured Erie County, City of Fort Wayne in Indiana, and Iowa. These governments have implemented Six Sigma and Lean to improve operations and ultimately their service to their people.

Lean Six Sigma at HattiesburgHattiesburg, Forrest County in Mississippi is another city that is adopting Lean Six Sigma for the same reason. According to the news article on the city’s website, HattiesburgAmerican.com, city officials have said that their program will focus on key principles known as DMAIC: Define opportunities, measure performance, analyze opportunity, improve performance and control performance.

Already, under this program, the city has selected city employees, Julia Lowe, an Urban Development accountant, and Maj. Billy Lane with the police department to attend Lean Six Sigma training classes.

Common notion has it that public service sucks. But with these cities taking the lead in changing that reputation, I’m sure in time, excellent public service will be achieved and sustained.

The SixSig Roundup

Posted by: meikah | 7 February 2008 | 9:11 pm

sixHere’s another serving of the SixSig roundup. Data is very important in Six Sigma, and so the focus of this roundup is data, data management, and data quality.
The ASQ blog needs your thoughts on sizing up the government: For those of us who are schooled in the methods and values of quality and organizational improvement (e.g., Deming, Kaizen, SPC, Lean Six Sigma, etc.), what would the process of assessing government agency missions look like? Are there any best practice examples around the world that our Government Division and other readers know about? What can the Government Division do in the days and weeks ahead, to think about the work of the next Administration, and offer the benefit of our knowledge and experience?

Informatica Data Quality Blog says that you can’t achieve customer data integration without data quality. CDI helps you to address data quality issues, such as accuracy, timeliness, and completeness.

Over at BNET, managers are encouraged to apply evidence-based management. People can make good decisions when armed with complete data.

Joyce Norris-Montanari of Dataflux asks “do you do data?” Doing Data includes any process, model, database, architecture, data stewardship issue, data governance issue, or metadata repositories that include data.

Six Sigma Reference: Six Sigma? Glad You Asked eBook

Posted by: meikah | 5 February 2008 | 8:27 pm

six sigma ebookGianna C. Clark of iSixSigma Blogosphere recently released an eBook, Six Sigma? Glad You Asked. Although I have yet to check out its pages, judging from the titles of the chapters, I know this is a Six Sigma reference that people can actually use.

It’s simply written, based on Gianna’s years of Six Sigma experience, and without the gobbledygook that usually comes in technical books. It’s like you have a question about Six Sigma, then you get this book to find the answers. Much like an encyclopedia.

Read here a review of the book.

Lean Six Sigma at General Cable

Posted by: meikah | 4 February 2008 | 8:07 pm

Ranked #561 by Fortune 500 in 2007, General Cable in Indianapolis was awarded one of the ten best manufacturing companies in North America.

According to the article on Mineral Wells Index.com, consistency is an important award criteria. General Cable demonstrated the ability to be good and sustain that level of performance, perhaps even improve it continuously.

Buck Wright, the plant manager, said that the whole group is proud of their achievements so far, and that they attribute their success to Lean Six Simga.

“The main tools of the plant are Six Sigma and Lean Manufacturing. Six sigma is a philosophy of doing business that eliminates defects through a knowledge of the fundamental processes. It’s a method to make sure you get to the root cause of problems instead of just putting a band-aid on.”

At General Cable, which boasts of a low turnover, there is great teamwork among the old and new members. Many of the employees have grown together and so they have developed an efficient working atmosphere.

Well, Six Sigma and Lean can do all that to any company.
