MGBS Promotes Six Sigma to Beat the Crisis
Posted by: meikah | 19 February 2009 | 12:06 am
Millennium Global Business Solutions (MGBS) promotes Six Sigma to beat the global crisis. In an article on The Economic Times (ET),the company vows to assist their company-clients in the US, China, India and other South Asian countries.
MGBS President and CEO, Dr Shree Nanguneri, told ET, “We have a large network of experts in these markets. We will pool them to conduct training sessions with consultants engaged by us. It is during down turn, companies should create more customers, build their loyalty and brand value for products and services.”
I see no reason why Six Sigma can’t help companies weather the economic storm. After all, according to a Six Sigma expert, by deploying lean Six Sigma practices, companies can work more closely with customers to retain the supply chain. This will keep their sales line busy with enough orders.

Lean Six Sigma Award for Ecolab
Posted by: meikah | 18 February 2009 | 8:28 pm
Last March 2007, Ecolab announced that it will go into Lean Six Sigma, specifically in its manufacturing and supply chain processes.
Almost two years after that pronouncement, the company gets a Lean Six Sigma award. Ecolab gets the Process Excellence Award for “Best Start Up Program” at the 10th Annual Lean Six Sigma & Process Improvement Summit recently held in Orlando, Forida.
The award for “Best Start Up Program” recognizes the achievements of new Lean Six Sigma and Process Excellence programs that have been deployed for a relatively short time within an organization. Ecolab was judged on direction setting, delivering business benefits and initial culture change around its Lean Six Sigma efforts.
“Ecolab created significant momentum and sustainability in our Lean Six Sigma deployment,” said Jeff Burt, Vice President & Global Deployment Leader for Lean Six Sigma at Ecolab. “Extensive upfront planning, combined with a high level of executive engagement has created a successful launch of our LSS program. It has also created strong leadership and talent development opportunities for our associates, as well as a culture that continues to support our efforts to streamline operations while maintaining a strong customer focus.”
Congratulations, Ecolab!

Neo Derm Group Banks on Six Sigma
Posted by: meikah | 16 February 2009 | 10:08 pm
Many companies have postponed their expansion due to the global economic crisis. But not Neo Derm Group, the Hong Kong-based medical aesthetic service provider, which opened its first medical center under its skin rejuvenation brand, Reenex, in Shanghai last month.
Lim Meng-teng, founder and managing director of Neo Derm Group, says “Expanding our service to the mainland at this point of time is challenging. But we are optimistic about the outlook of China’s medical aesthetic market.”
He adds:
Chinese women, especially those from major cities, are increasingly well educated, have strong purchasing power and demand better beauty services. And his Six Sigma process management has leveraged the group to double its turnover every two years in Hong Kong and rake in an impressive year-on-year 41 percent growth in revenue in 2008.

Six Sigma and Pricing
Posted by: meikah | 16 February 2009 | 9:10 pm
In these difficult times, pricing may also be a challenging endeavor. How much discounts are you willing to give, or how much cheaper are you selling away your products and services?
Over at Salebarn blog, Mark Bruns outlines how Six Sigma can help companies in their pricing operations. Through the DMAIC, companies are able to come up with an optimized and coordinated pricing strategy.
The five stages of Six Sigma pricing are taken from the Six Sigma toolkit, but they are specifically adapted for pricing processes:
Define the pricing-related “defect” in operational-, transaction-, or contract-specific pricing processes and the extent of the defect.
Measure the extent of the defect along with parameters of the pricing processes as well as the invoice, say by analyzing past invoices.
Analyze the data collected in Measure to infer how the size or incidence of defects varies with different aspects of the pricing processes as well as brainstorm on the other causes of defects related to the existing process.
Improve the process by making process change recommendations along with quantitative estimates of how much improvement in related prices or other metrics would take place following implementation of these changes.
Control the proposed process. For example, recommend controls to ensure that people are following the agreed-upon modifications and that the estimated benefits are achieved.

What Companies Can Expect from their Lean Management Approach
Posted by: meikah | 16 February 2009 | 7:06 pm
I stumbled upon this old article on ManageSmarter, which gives out the following Lean Six Sigma stats:
- Cost to produce down 20-plus percent.
- Inventory down 50 to 80 percent.
- Lead times reduced 60 to 90-plus percent.
- Cost of quality down 50 to 70 percent.
- Throughput increased by 10 percent.
- Revenue and earnings growth at least twice those of your competition.
The lean consultants at R. Michael Donovan & Co., Inc., agree that manufacturers should expect effective Lean Sigma efforts to produce such results.

IT Can Pave the Way to Your Lean Journey
Posted by: meikah | 12 February 2009 | 9:23 pm
Recently, we find lean principles being applied to more transactional events such as controlling supply chains, reducing inventories and manufacturing to customer demand. Lean has taken on processes that have a new level of complexity.
When these things happen, companies need to have some sort of a system to wade through the complex tasks. Systems can best be established with information technology, or IT.
Thus, IT may not really be the direct solutions to manufacturing or transactional problems, but it can definitely pave the way to a company’s Lean journey. Here are some of the reasons why:
- IT can be used as a mechanism to systematize the lean discipline
- IT can help companies sustain it and scale it across the organization
- and while adopting IT tools to support their lean initiatives may be good, companies may also need to do it with a clear understanding of what they are trying to accomplish

Lean Six Sigma Comic
Posted by: meikah | 10 February 2009 | 11:55 pm

Rath & Strong and Cox Comics‘ have come up with an “attitudinal” Lean Six Sigma comic.
Titled, Another Crazy Idea? the comic uses visual storytelling to positively affect attitudes toward Lean Six Sigma. Its goal is to encourage front line workers to give LSS a chance and encourage them to have a role in their LSS initiative.
I have been a long-standing fun of Cox Comics over at iSixSigma blogosphere, and so I know this comic will again depict the successes and challenges in the quality management scenario.
