Vestas’s Big Savings Due to Lean Six Sigma

Posted by: meikah | 18 August 2009 | 8:03 pm

The Economic Times reports:

Vestas Wind Energy India, the Chennai headquartered wind power company, has saved $10 million in its expenses in the past three years through implementation of a Six Sigma Methodology, patented by Dr.Shree Nanguneri, CEO of Millenium Global Business Solutions (MGBS).

“The Lean Six Sigma (LSS) methodology that we adopted warranted that a mass awareness be created among employees. We educated a majority of them on the Yellow Belt concept and put them on the field,” said Vestas supply chain management and quality director Dhananjay Joshi. “This enhanced collective competency as opposed to that of just a few employees at the senior level, as in the Black Belt methodology.”

Caterpillar Inc. Attributes Second Quarter Profit to Six Sigma

Posted by: meikah | 16 August 2009 | 7:32 pm

According to the press release:

Caterpillar Inc. reported a second-quarter profit of $0.60 per share, down $1.14 per share from the second quarter of 2008… The second-quarter profit of $371 million was down $735 million from $1.106 billion in the second quarter of 2008. The decline was largely a result of lower sales volume and $85 million of redundancy costs. These negative impacts were partially offset by lower Selling, General and Administrative (SG&A) and Research and Development (R&D) expenses, favorable price realization, LIFO inventory decrement benefits and a lower tax rate.

In addition to profit, Caterpillar is highly focused on delivering positive cash flow in 2009 and is committed to its $3 billion inventory reduction goal for the year. Utilizing the Caterpillar Production System (CPS) with 6 Sigma, the company reduced inventory in the second quarter by more than $800 million, and through the first half of the year inventory has declined by more than $1.6 billion.

sixsig innovation of the week

BNET shares:

Apple makes it look easy. From the sleek design of its personal computers to the clever intuitiveness of its software to the ubiquity of the iPod to the genius of the iPhone, Apple consistently redefines each market it enters by creating brilliant gadgets that put the competition to shame. What’s the secret? Apple has built its management system so that it’s optimized to create distinctive products. That’s good news for would-be emulators, because it means Apple’s method for innovation can be understood as a specific set of management practices and organizational structures that — in theory, at least — anyone can use. This Crash Course outlines the techniques Apple uses to make the magic happen.

Lean Six Sigma Improves Productivity

Posted by: meikah | 12 August 2009 | 8:02 pm

An article on Democrat and Chronicle says that employee productivity in the U.S. increased in the second quarter of 2009. And according to the U.S. Labor Department, the increase has never been this high since Autumn of 2003.

A lot of reasons are viewed as contributing to this increased productivity. One of them is that many workers had been laid off, so those who were left behind  had to work doubly hard. Another reason is that it can be a sign that the economy is improving and recession is drawing to a close.

In any case, employee productivity during good or bad economic days should be consistently high. There’s a way to do it. Some companies use Lean Six Sigma.

Xerox Corp. for example attests to the value of Lean Six Sigma for their employee productivity.

At Xerox Corp., the company employs a productivity technique called Lean Six Sigma, which removes waste and variations from its projects.

In the first quarter of 2009, Xerox expanded the process to a particular supply chain supporting its business in the Western Hemisphere, and the company expects to save $2.5 million on an annualized basis.

Douglas E. Burgess, senior vice president of Lean Six Sigma, cited the supply-chain efficiency as just one example of how Xerox has raised productivity.

Posted by: meikah | 11 August 2009 | 8:47 pm

PQ Systems Quality E-Line

PQ Systems through it’s Quality eline newsletter brings us another quality quiz.

For this month’s quiz, you get a chance to win a copy of the newly-released collection of Quality Quiz Classics. Submit your response by August 27 to be entered in the drawing.

Anna Gramm is learning to make charts for Deer Dairy Farms, a small firm that produces ice cream. In evaluating the quality of the finished product, the company is insistent on consistency among all the ice cream that is shipped. For chocolate-chip-cookie-dough ice cream, for example, inspectors examine content for the number of chocolate chips and the amount of cookie dough in sample containers of the product. In addition, inspectors must evaluate creaminess factors and melt temperature for each sampled container, and must examine the container label to be sure that it accurately indicates contents, that it is applied straight, and that the printing is correct. This proofreading task was added to their task list after a shipment went out that proclaimed the name of the dairy as “Dear Diary,” so the firm is sensitive about its image.

Continue on to the quiz.

Winners of last month’s quiz and who each gets a copy of the Quality Quiz Classics DVD are:

Tony Armijo (Presbyterian Healthcare)
Lynn Billings (Petro-Canada)
Jonathan Downey (Schivo Precision, Ireland)
Ian Newsom (Lion Nathan, Australia)
Robert Todd (Fruit of the Loom).

Congratulations!
