Typhoon Ondoy Challenges the Efficiency of Organizations
Posted by: meikah | 29 September 2009 | 2:09 am
By this time, I know you’ve heard about typhoon Ondoy and how it devastated many cities in the Philippines.
Since mid-day Saturday, SMS, emails, and all other microbloging networks had been deluged with updates on flooded areas. Before that Saturday ended, simple message turned into cries for help.
There are many accounts about Typhoon Ondoy, but let me share with you an article that pretty much sums up what happened on the height of the storm: In social media, a deluge of SOS messages
Indeed, the incident has encouraged global attention and spurred worldwide concern. Many Filipinos overseas, friends of Filipinos, countries, even strangers have extended help for the victims of Typhoon Ondoy.
The situation is heartbreaking. Organizations and local government units that are supposed to be on top of the situation in times like these have been deemed remiss in their duties. But the support from all over the world has come pouring in as fast and as strong as the flood waters were. The goodness of the human heart again emerges.
Below are sites that lead you to where you can send in your donations for Typhoon Ondoy victims or help find missing persons.

With such magnitude of need, can Six Sigma or Lean Six Sigma help local agencies and organizations deliver help and support efficiently?

Lean Six Sigma in Fastfood
Posted by: meikah | 24 September 2009 | 6:35 pm

By its name alone, fastfood restaurants should serve good food fast and quick. So just imagine when it fails to do just that. It will naturally result in disgruntled customers, which could lead to the death of the business.
Now Lean Six Sigma promises to speed up processes without reconciling the quality of performance. Thus, if you think of improving your fastfood business, what better way than to implement Lean Six Sigma.
An article on Six Sigma Online says that indeed Lean Six Sigma can help improve fastfood operations.
For the sake of practical example, imagine that a fast food restaurant is experiencing wastes on the grill line because there are too many steps and too many people completing these steps which of course leads to things slowing down. With Lean Six Sigma, the entire process can be analyzed, and statistical analysis can demonstrate where wastes occur, how to get rid of them, and better ways to improve the situation on a factual and data-driven level. After looking at everything, you can see that there are too many people in the same spot, and it is slowing things down. By reallocating the employees throughout the workplace, it will be much easier to succeed in speed and efficiency.

Posted by: meikah | 21 September 2009 | 7:14 pm
Time and again, we are told that leadership involvement is very crucial in any Six Sigma or Lean Six Sigma initiatives. But often Six Sigma teams still have a hard time getting full support from the leaders.
Here are six steps to get leadership involved in Lean Six Sigma.
- Verify the core needs of the customers and the business.Â
- Identify and map suitable metrics that are aligned with these requirements. This may require the creation of new metrics and possibly the elimination of outdated measures.
- Understand the performance over time for each of the metrics.
- Strategically determine which projects have the highest priority. Leaders will need to determine the criteria for the matrix, and having them work through the matrix creates ownership.
- Provide the resources for projects. This will start with a Champion to help guide the project, secure the resources and report progress to the leaders on a regular basis.
- Continue the cycle of involvement. As projects are completed and results achieved, leadership must begin the process of continuing to determine the next projects, provide resources…
