Innovation of the Week: 3 Critical Innovation Lessons from Apple

This week’s edition of innovation update features again Apple.
Writing for Bloomberg.com, Scott Anthony share the three critical innovation lessons from Apple:
- Don’t just focus on building beautiful products. Build beautiful business models, new ways to create, deliver, and capture value. The iPod and iPhone would not have had nearly as much impact if they hadn’t been matched with iTunes and the AppExchange respectively.
- Think in terms of platforms and pipelines. Competitors that chase Apple’s latest release find themselves behind when six months later Apple introduces its latest and greatest offering.
- Take a portfolio approach. While Apple has been on a phenomenal run, not everything it has introduced has been a home run. For example, Apple TV hasn’t had the “revolutionary” impact that Jobs predicted upon its launch in 2007.

Becoming a Lean Six Sigma Organization

We have talked several times how an organization has been benefited by going into Lean Six Sigma. But I think we have not touched the part on how to become a Lean Six Sigma Organization. Or if we have, this article on iSixSigma is a good resource.
According to the article, to which I agree, like any other process improvement, one of the best ways to roll out a Lean Six Sigma program is to treat the process as a Six Sigma process in and of itself.
As such, we use the classic five-stage DMAIC process:
Define – All senior leaders must become familiar with Six Sigma concepts and what being a Six Sigma organization actually means.
Measure – Progress must be measured as the program is rolled out through a well-thought out key performance indicators.

Using Six Sigma to Set Up a Consulting Business

John Weathington of TechRepublic blog shares that when he started his business consulting he had nothing much, and so he had quite a problem.
So for those who plan to go into business consulting, he recommends to view the business as a process and look quality methodologies such as Six Sigma and its tools: DMAIC to DMADV. Using this tool, here are his suggested five phases of building a consulting process.
- Define – First, determine what you want your business to produce, or its output.
- Measure – You need to consider who will benefit from your service (i.e., your clients), and what their definition is of a quality service.
- Analyze – In this brainstorming phase, you start putting down ideas for how to systematically run your business to accomplish your goals and provide a quality service for your clients.
- Design – This is where you start organizing everything into the set of processes that will run your business.
- Verify – This phase starts with prototyping. Try out your process on a small scale in the real world and see what happens.

Six Sigma for Electricity Cost Savings

This summer, Meralco customers were given a double whammy: rotating brownouts and increased power rates. The reason for the brownouts was deficiency in generation. On the other hand, the increased power
rates were due to a hike in generation charge.
The question now is will Meralco be able to maximize their business and help their customers save up on cost through Six Sigma?
Perhaps, the company can learn from what Aiken County School District and Savannah River Remediation (SRR) LLC did. According to an article on AikenStandard.com, because of Six Sigma implementation, taxpayers can expect to save about $190,000 a year and avoid another $400,000 all in electricity cost savings.
In the article, it says:
When combining the results of the Six Sigma project with the additional efforts of the Energy Committee, the district is estimating total savings of about $190,000 and a cost avoidance of approximately $400,000 for 2009.
The total implementation capital costs are expected to cost about $10,000. Those costs are mostly for more energy-efficient lighting and thermostat changes.

Six Sigma Companies News: New Tesla-Toyota partnership reportedly will use NUMMI plant

San Francisco Business Times reports:
California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger said Thursday that electric car-maker Tesla Motors and Japanese automaker Toyota will produce a car together in the state. The Associated Press is reporting the cars will be built at the former home of the New United Motor Manufacturing Inc. plant — or NUMMI — in Fremont.
